Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters.
The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. (Actually she is a pedant.) Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.
The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book.
The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”. The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.
People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.
I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.
In “Pride and Prejudice”, the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.
In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?
Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”, her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time. It describes a love story mainly between Elisabeth, who I like the best, and a rich and proud man, Darcy.
The story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the Bennet. In a ball, Elisabeth gave such a bad impression on Darcy’s first pride that she refused Darcy’s first proposal. Darcy was so surprised by Elisabeth’s refusal that he loved Elisabeth more deeply. And Elisabeth’s antipathy(厭惡，憎恨) made Darcy realize his shortcomings. He was not angry about Elisabeth’s censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude. Her novels all described the lifestyle and social communications of families in the countries of England as what she is familiar with. The book Pride and Prejudice is the typical one that fully expressed Jane’s view on marriage and emphasized that the benefit on economic exerts a great influence on marriage.
The characters in the novel all had their own opinions on marriage. Mrs. Bennet, for instance, has only one aim-that of finding a good match for each of her five daughters.
As for Elizabeth, who is the second daughter in the Bennet family said that only deep love would persuade her to marry which was why she would probably end up an old maid. Lydia and Charlotte, however, were two extremes. The former just married for sex, while the latter married for a comfortable home and protection.

I have read some parts of this nover when I was about thirteen years old,but the book was really too thick for me to read over patiently.It’s a pity that I haven’t finished it till now.But fortunately, I have watched the movie “Pride and Predudice”directed by an American film studio several months ago.The simple but pure plot,the wonderful song,the classical custume, the luxury ball,the scene full of amorous feelings from the British country,the beatiful and stubborn actress,all of these moved me deeply.
Mr. Darcy,the actor of the nover,a nobleman from the uper-classes in England,because of this , he has an inborn superiority that he looks down at every person from the lower-classes . He don’t like neither their life style nor their way to think.
Elizabeth,the actress of the nover,an obstinate,wise young girl from the lower-classes of the country.She dosen’t like anyone who is constumelious,she hates the spurs from the pride men.
By these, you know,there’er lots of conflicts between them,but at last,Darcy and Elizabeth,the two different even opposite youngsters fall love .That’s very incredible.
In fact,we are always pride and think something in our mind but not right,we assess the others only depend on their background or their color of skin , we hide our true heart and pretend ,we dispise the others without any reason……
But why don’t we ask ourselves in our heart or mind: what do we feel in fact? What do we need in fact? What do we hate and love in fact? Why not express our real feelings at once?Why not chase the happy we really want ?……

Pride and Prejudice is a novel written by the famous English writer, Jane Austen, who was the sixth children in a family of seven and was born in the village of steventon in Hampshire in 1775 and died of Addison’s disease in 1817. The book first published on 28 January 1813 by the bookseller Thomas Egerton who had also published Sense and Sensibility, the original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions .
Pride and Prejudice is a love story, mainly tells the love between Elizabeth and Darcy. It divided into 2 volumes and is composed of 42 chapters altogether. The major characters are Mr. Darcy, A rich and proud young man. Elizabeth, the second eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Bingley , A rich young bachelor. Jane, the first daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Bennet. The story begin with Bingley’s arrival. One day when Mrs.Bennet hear Bingley has taken Netherfield, a house near her’s. She is so happy and arranged one of her five daughters marriage with him. At a ball, luckly, Bingley and Jane fall in love at the first sight. Darcy, a friend of Bingley’s , was attracted to Elizabeth, a lively and spirited girl. But Darcy greatly offends her by his supercilious behavior and this dislike is increased by Wickham, a dashing young militia officer of the unjust treatment he has met with at Darcys hands.
One day when Darcy and Bingley’s two sisters disgusted with the vulgarity of Mrs. Bennet and her two youngest daughters, effectively separated Bingley and Jane. Meanwhile, Collins, a cousin of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, married charlotte, a friend of Elizabeth’s, for Elizabeth’s refuse to marry him. But One day Darcy send Elizabeth a letter, in which he justifies the separation of his friend Bingley and Jane and make it clear that Wickham is. So Elizabeth changed her opinions and ideas toward him. Once when Elizabeth visited her uncle and aunt in the north of England, she met Darcy there and witnessed his changes through series of behaviors, no longer pride and become gentle and attentive, all these made their marriage arranged, and they also suitably provided for Bingley and Jane’s reunited and engaged. The story ends with both their happy marriages.
My point of view towards the masterpiece of Jane Austen’s is that this novel reflects the English human sentiment of the end of 18th century and the early of 19th century under the circumstance of conservative，and tells us the difference ways and attitudes to marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five daughters’. Thereby reveal the author herself attitude towards marriage, that is love and marriage based on money, property and social status is not perfect, but it is also stupid Without considering all of these. There, the author emphasize the importance of ideal marriage, meanwhile, to be opposed to love & marriage based on money or property and to be opposed to people’s laugh love & marriage off.
The author takes the affection/love as the cornerstone of ideal marriage between male and female. Elizabeth as the leading character in this novel, was born in the family of squireen’s, and is loved by Darcy. Darcy propose marriage to her in spite of difference in the possession of property and social status, but is refused byElizabeth for his pride , the novel demonstrate that if the pride of Darcy’s existed ， there will be no love and also happy marriage between Elizabeth and he, it is really nice that Elizabeth witness the changes of Darcy’s through series of behavior in the following days.
Viewing that he is no longer pride and then eliminating her prejudice to him, finally engaged with him and leading a happy marriage. The character in this book I like best is Elizabeth. From where I stand, Elizabeth is unique. From story to see, Elizabeth has both resourcefulness and courage. She has vision and very strong self-respect. What’s more, she is good at thinking. She owns her views and behaves properly. In the novel, WhenMr.Collins expresses his love and wants to marry her, she can promptly refuse him. Furthermore, when Darcy’s aunt arrogantly puts forward her requirement that Elizabeth should reject Mr.Darcy, she firmly turns down her offensive requirement. From it, we can see that Elizabeth has her own persistence of love and never stop pursuing. Of course at first Elizabeth also displays significant pride. Though not influenced by economic status, Elizabeth is most proud of her ability of perception. Although it is her wrong perception which causes her to misjudge Mr.Darcy and also Wickham, when Elizabeth hears of Wickham’saccusations of Darcy, she trusts the negative perception of him, and mistakenly views Darcy’sconceit. From the view point of Austen, Elizabeth’s marriage, who finally marries Darcy, as well as Jane-Bingley’s, composing money and love, is the ideal marriage people should after. But in other marriage cases in this novel, we can see that if money and love can’t be held together in one marriage, love would always make a concession to money because of the special social background. After reading through the whole book, we will find that money acts as the cause of each plot and the clue of its development. It affects everybody’s words and deeds, even Elizabeth Bennet. Tony Tanner once said, “Jane Austen, as well as other authors, is very clear that no feeling could be extremely pure and no motive could be definitely single. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time. It describes a love story mainly between Elisabeth, who I like the best, and a rich and proud man, Darcy.
The story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the Bennet. In a ball, Elisabeth gave such a bad impression on Darcys first pride that she refused Darcys first proposal. Darcy was so surprised by Elisabeths refusal that he loved Elisabeth more deeply. And Elisabeths antipathy（厭惡,憎恨） made Darcy realize his shortings. He was not angry about Elisabeths censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude. During Elisabeths travel in Darcys manor（莊園）. Darcy was very nice to her uncle and aunt, different from previous proud attitude. When one of Elisabeths sisters ran away with Wickham, Darcy helped Elisabeth find her sister and prevent her sister from the loss of reputation, with nobody knowing that it was he who helped the Bennet. So many changes in Darcy eliminated（消除） Elisabeths prejudice. At last it end with their marriage.
Taking the daily life as its material, this story reflected the life and love in a conservative你（保守派） and blocking England town. It reflected the authors view about marriage that it is fault to marry for property, money and status and it is also foolish to take these elements into account. In fact Darcys pride manifested（證明） the gap （間隙,差距）between their statuses（地位）. Since his pride existed, there is no ideal marriage between Elisabeth and Darcy. From the different attitudes from Darcys two proposals, it reflected the feminine（女性） pursuit of personality independence and right equality, which is a progressive（先進的） character from the image of Elisabeth.

First, we throw our eyes to the male characters.Take George Wickham for example, he is an old acquaintance of Darcy from childhood, and an officer in the militia unit stationed near Merton.Superficially charming, he rapidly forms a friendship with Elizabeth Benet, prompting remarks upon his suitability as a potential husband.He spreads numerous tales about the wrongs Darcy has done to him, coloring the popular perception of the other man in local society.It is eventually revealed that these tales are distortions, and that Darcy was the wronged man in their acquaintance.He is a man with bad quality, but his appearance is deceptive, he has a witty tongue and elegant behavior, who is a deadly attraction to women like Lydia.Once he was addicted to gambling and escape from Breton because of a large amount of debts.Lydia has neither high status nor money, but he is willing to have an accompanier on his escaping way.The book never mentioned why Wickham choose Lydia as his wife.The primary reason, in my eyes, is money.Because he fell in love with Mi King and Elizabeth before not because of love but money.At that time, Wickham can not have a large heritage because of his lower social status, so he is greedier for money.At last, Mr.Darcy helped him to pay for his debts and provided him with another 1000 pounds and a official position, which immediately led to his marriage.So we can easily see, in spite of paion, money played an important role in their marriage.Besides, Mr.Collins aged twenty-five, is Mr.Benet’s clergyman cousin and, as Mr.Benet has no son, heir to his estate.Austen described him as "not a sensible man, and the deficiency of nature had been but little aisted by education or society.” He is a clumsy and conceit man and good at flattering, so he can easily appreciated
by Mrs.Catherine and gets a position in church.Mr.Collins chose Lady Lucas obviously attributed to love.He expreed his reasons about marriage when he asked for Elizabeth’s hands:” First, that I think it a right thing for every clergyman in easy circumstances (like myself) to set the example of matrimony in his parish.Secondly, that I can convinced it will add every greatly to my happine; and thirdly which perhaps I ought to have mentioned earlier, that it is the particular advice and recommendation of the very noble lady whom I have the honor of calling patrone.” So Mr.Collins is a person who sacrifices his marriage to reality and reputation.
In spite of Mr.Bingley and Mr.Darcy’s values, I think, Wickham and Mr.Collins’s attitudes toward marriage should be the majority of values at that time.Males pursue high status and money rather than love.So how could they be happy? Their marriages are doomed to tragedies.
Now we will throw our eyes back to females.Of course, Elizabeth Benet is our first consideration.Elizabeth Bennet is the main character and protagonist.The reader sees the unfolding plot and the other characters mostly from her viewpoint.The second of the Benet daughters at twenty years old, she is intelligent, lively, attractive, and witty, but with a tendency to judge on first impreions and perhaps to be a little selective of the evidence upon which she bases her judgments.Elizabeth believed that marriage must be based on love, which is one of the reasons why she misunderstood Mr.Darcy before.She is such a girl with great wit, courage and self-conscience so that she is not polluted by society and keeps her own opinions.And at last grasped Mr.Darcy’s heart tightly and live a happy life.In contrast to Elizabeth, her intimate friend Charlotte Lucas doesn’t think highly either of men or of matrimony, marriage had always been her object.She believes that it is the only honorable provision for well-educated young women of small fortune, and however uncertain of giving happine, must be their pleasantest preservative from want.So although Mr.Collins to be sure was neither sensible nor agreeable; his society was irksome, and his attachment to her must be imaginary.But still, he would be her husband.This is a miserable marriage which put interest ahead of everything.
It seems a little bit difference between males and females’ attitudes towards marriage.Males completely regard money and status beyond everything while women conceal something in some degree but still be obseed by reality.Elizabeth is an exception.Jane Austen expreed
