4. call on 訪問;號召
e.g. An old friend called on me the day before yesterday.

※ besides 表示“除……之外(還有)”
except 表示“除……之外”

2. What is missing?
辨析missing, lost & gone
三者的共同點:都是adj., 都有“丟失”的意思。
不同之處:
missing 強調“失蹤了、不見了”,有可能還找得回來。
lost 強調“失去的,喪失的”,一般指找不回來了。
gone 強調“過去的,不見了”,但只能做表語。
e.g. My English-Chinese dictionary is missing.
They have found the missing child in the forest.
It’s no use crying over the lost chance.
My pen was lost so I had to buy a new one.
My fever is gone but I still have a cough.
The days are gone when the workers lived a hard life.

Seem用法總結::
(1) Seem + (to be )+形容詞 / 名詞 / 介詞短語 / 分詞(to be可以省略)
e.g. You seem to be in a great hurry. 你好像非常匆忙.
(2) Seem + 不定式(一般式,完成式或進行式)
e.g. He did not seem to have changed. 他似乎沒有變。
Several people in the crowd seemed to be fighting.
人群中好像有好幾個人在打假。
(3) It seem that ……
It seemed that everyone was satisfied.=Everyone seemed to be satisfied.好像人人都很滿意。
(4)It seems as if/as though …
It seems as if you are the first one hear. 看起來你是第一個來這兒的。
(5)There seems (to be) …
There seems (to be ) no reason for believing him.
似乎沒什么理由相信他。
There does not seem to have been any difficulty over the money problem.
在錢的問題上似乎已沒什么困難。
※ 辨析seem , look 與 appear
seem 表示有某種根據的判斷,這種判斷往往接近或符合事實。
look 強調視覺上的印象。
appear 表示從外表或表面上看“似乎”,“好像”,有時暗含“事實上并非如此”之意。
注意 ①三個詞都可以后接形容詞.名詞.分詞等。
②appear與 seem 后可接to do,而look 后只可接to be.
③look 后可接as if 引起的從句,而不能接 that 從句。

§Reading
4. I am sorry, but I do not know you.
(1)句中I do not think I know you.是否定轉移的用法,
不能說:I think I do not know you.
主語為第一人稱,謂語動詞為 believe, expect, guess, imagine, suppose, think且含賓語從句的復合句,在變否定句時要進行否定轉移。
I do not believe he has worked out the difficult problem.
我相信他還沒有解出這道難題。
I do not suppose they’ll be back tonight.
我像他們今晚不會回來了。
But I do not think we can go.
但是,我想我們不能去。
I did not imagine that they would say anything.
我想他們不會說什么。
(2) but
but 永在表示歉意的話語后,可引導一個句子,常不能譯作“但是”,可以不翻譯。
e.g. I am sorry, but I do not agree with you. 不好意思,我不同意你所說的。
※ 以上句子在變反意疑問句時,疑問句部分中的動詞和主語應和賓語從句中的動詞和主語保持一致,若陳述部分的主句的主語是第二,三人稱,則疑問句部分應與陳述部分的主句一致。
I did not think he was happy, was he?
我認為他并不幸福,是不是?
I do not suppose that he cares, does he?
我認為他并不關心,是不是?
You did not think he can finish the work, do you?
你不認為他能完成工作,是嗎?
5. Sorry, I didn’t recognize you.
注意該句中的didn’t的用法。此句的意思是“我剛才沒有認出你來。”即現在已經認出來了,所以用的一般過去時,不能用一般現在時或現在完成時。
6. Well, I would rather not tell you.
would rather do sth. 寧愿,愿意做某事
would rather not do sth. 不愿意做謀事,寧可不做謀事
would rather + 從句(常用一般過去時表示現在或將來的情況)
would rather do A than do B 寧愿做A而不愿做B
would do A rather than do B 寧愿做A而不愿做B
e.g. I would rather stay here and have a good rest.
I’d rather you started off right away.
I would rather go skating than stay at home.
=I would go skating rather than stay at home.

1) after all 畢竟,終究

4) at all 常和否定詞連用,表示“根本(不)”

worth adj. 值得的
be worth + 價格 值……錢
be worth + doing 值得做
e.g. This book is worth 20 dollars.

※ 注意比較worthy adj. “值得的,配得上的”的用法

be worthy + of being done 值得做
= be worthy to be done
