1. vacation“假期”,指正式規定的較長的假期,不指假日或節日。

[辨析]holiday與leave
(1)holiday既可以指假期(也可用復數),也可指節假日。
(2)leave休假,準假,多指政府部門機關,尤指部隊的休假。
on holiday (在)度假 holiday dress節日盛裝
ask for leave請假
2. than expected“比預料的”, as expected“如預料的那樣”。expect“預想, 預期,料想”。
There are more people present than expected. 到場的人比預料的要多。
3. surprise
vt.使驚奇;使驚訝
What surprised me most was that the little boy could speak English so well .
surprising adj.令人吃驚的 surprised adj. 吃驚的;受驚的
She wore a surprised face when she came in the room. 她進門時臉上是一副驚訝的表情。
n.令人驚奇的事(可數)吃驚;驚奇

4. Eric runs in after it, followed by a big dog,walking very slowly. 埃里克跑進來追球,后面跟著一只走得慢騰騰的狗。
(1) followed by 為過去分詞短語作伴隨或方式狀浯,表示被動含義。

(2) walking very slowly 為現在分詞短語作定語。
Do you know the boy (who is) lying under the big tree? 你認識那個躺在大樹下的男孩嗎?
5. be supposed to do
(1)表示按照義務、規則、規律或約定“理應,應該做……”。
(2)被認為,被看作是
He is supposed to arrive before six o'clock. 他應該6點以前到達。
Business is not as good as it was supposed to be. 生意不如想象的那么好。
6. The money with which you were to buy dog food is gone,but Spot looks so hungry! 你應該用來買狗食的錢不見了,但Spot好像還在挨餓。
be to do結構常用來表示計劃、安排、指示,命令或要求等,它也可以表示可能性或注定要發生的事情。
Their daughter is to be married soon. 他們的女兒很快就結婚了。
You are to be back by 10 o'clock. 你必須10點以前回來。
7. leave“讓……處于某種狀態”,后跟復合賓語。能作其賓語補足語的除了介詞短語之外,還可以是形容詞、副詞、分詞、名詞等。
Don't leave her waiting in the rain. 別讓她在雨里等。
He seemed to have left something unsaid. 他似乎有些話沒說。
He left all the windows open. 他讓所有的窗戶都開著。
Don't leave all the lights on. 別把所有的燈都開著。
The parents died,leaving the boy an orphan. 父母雙亡,孩子成了孤兒。
I left him to explain it to them. 我讓他給他們作解釋。
8. in charge掌管,負責
take charge 接管,take charge of 接管……,in charge of 掌管……
in/under the charge of 在……的掌管下
Who is in charge here? 這兒誰負責?
The factory is in the charge of Li Hai. 這家工廠的廠長是李海。
When did you take charge of the company? 你什么時候接管的這家公司?

(1)go與否定式過去分詞連用,表示某動作未發生。
Her absence went unnoticed.無人注意到她缺席;

(2)go作連系動詞,表示進入或處于某種狀態(多為不好的變化)
